Before The Wave
Project: Before The Wave
Client: Personal / Self-Initiated
Brief: Create a book exploring the deep connection between surfing, design, and spiritual practice — paired with a surf zine and a series of posters to promote surf codes like caring, sharing, and respect. The posters were designed to be placed on the beach near lifeguard posts to raise awareness about surfing rules and safety measures.
Role: Illustrator & Designer — developed the book and zine, poster series, and created an A5 surf etiquette booklet.
Idea: Use storytelling, illustration, and clear design to bring surfers’ attention back to the unwritten surf code — keeping the lineup safe, respectful, and positive.
Impact: Before The Wave serves as a practical tool for surf communities, helping new surfers understand core surf etiquette and keeping good vibes alive in the water.
Concept: Before The Wave ties together storytelling, design, and community education to protect the unwritten surf code. The book dives into surfing’s roots — how caring for each other, sharing waves, and respecting the ocean keep the culture alive. The poster series makes these values visible right where they matter most: at the beach, near the lineup. And the A5 etiquette booklet gives surfers a pocket guide to carry these principles into every session. Together, they work as a gentle reminder that good surf culture is built on good vibes — when everyone respects the code, the stoke is shared by all.
